Axolotls are carnivorous and feed on small prey such as worms, insects, and tiny fish by suction-feeding—drawing prey into their mouths with a quick gulp. Their regenerative abilities allow them to regrow limbs, tails, and even parts of their heart and brain. In the ecosystem, they serve as both predator and prey, helping control invertebrate populations. In the wild, their numbers are now heavily threatened by invasive species, habitat destruction, and water contamination.
