Armored Catfish

Armored Catfish

The Armored Catfish is a tough little swimmer with a built-in suit of armor! These fish are known for their bony plates that cover their bodies like tiny shields, giving them protection from predators and a very cool, prehistoric look. Most species are small to medium-sized, usually ranging from 4 to 12 inches long, and they come in earthy tones like brown, gray, or black to blend into the riverbeds they call home. They also have whisker-like barbels near their mouths to help them feel around in the muddy water, and a sucker-like mouth perfect for clinging to rocks.

These hardy fish are found in freshwater rivers and streams throughout Central and South America. They prefer slow-moving waters with lots of submerged logs, rocks, and plants where they can hide and forage. Armored Catfish are bottom-dwellers, spending most of their time scooting along the river floor, often in shady spots. They’re well adapted to murky, low-oxygen environments and can even gulp air from the surface when needed—a handy trick for survival during dry seasons or in warm, still water.

Armored Catfish are scavengers and algae-eaters, cleaning up leftover food, detritus, and plant material from the riverbed. Some species, like the popular Plecostomus or "pleco," are known for their algae-scrubbing skills, making them popular in home aquariums. In the wild, they help keep waterways clean and balanced by recycling nutrients and clearing algae buildup. Although peaceful and shy, they play a big role in their ecosystem and are excellent examples of how even the smallest creatures can have a mighty impact—especially when they’re armored like tiny tanks!
